As much as we were sorry to leave Bora Bora, Moorea certainly looked appealing from the airplane. We couldn't wait to see our "Deep Overwater Bungalow" at the Bali Hai Hotel.

We started out in the 2nd bungalow from the left (#45) but changed to #48 after one night. The Bali Hai is quite old and is showing its age. #45 had a rear deck that was a bit rotten and ready for renovation, while #48, recently renovated, was in good shape. The picture on the right shows the rear deck on the next bungalow. The water is quite deep below the rear end of the deck (20 or 30 feet). You can see the stairway at the near end of the deck that goes down to a platform just above the water with a ladder going down into the water.

The deck seen from inside the bungalow.

Feeding the fish through the "window."

The opening in the railing (left) is for using the deck as a diving platform (but we didn't).  The hole in the floor (right) is for viewing the fish. There's a light under the bungalow, and if it's turned on at night, it attracts various fish who expect a handout for their visit.

Down the ladder (left) from the bungalow you can see the collection of fish just hanging around. That's the tip of Phyllis' "water sneaker" on the ladder in the upper left corner.  On the right is a school of fish posing for a picture. I obliged. The speckled white stuff in the background is part of the 20 to 30 foot deep wall of coral just below the bungalows.

Did I mention we like to eat and drink? The bar (left) opens at 5PM for Happy Hour(s). Lunch is usually served at the poolside bar unless it's raining, whereupon they shift to the inside bar.

Phyllis loved the breakfast view at the Bali Hai and provided us with the picture on the right.
